Nation’s Highest Honor for STEM Teaching

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) are the highest honors bestowed by the United States government specifically for K–12 science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science teaching. Awards are given to teachers who have both deep content knowledge of the subjects they teach and the ability to motivate and enable students to be successful in those areas. Since the program’s inception, more than 4,800 teachers have been recognized for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession. The President may recognize up to 108 exemplary teachers each year. This year the Presidential Awards is honoring secondary teachers. Consider nominating a talented seventh- through twelfth-grade STEM teacher today using the PAEMST website. If you’re a teacher, you can begin an application at www.paemst.org.

The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the DEA Educational Foundation, and Discovery Education have launched the third annual Operation Prevention Video Challenge—a peer-to-peer platform for communicating messages about the dangers of opioid misuse. High school students should grab their camera, recruit their friends, and create a 30- to 60-second original public service announcement aimed to reach other teens about this widespread issue.
