Virtual Field Trips and Online STEM Learning Experiences

Students can visit the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) in Chicago without leaving their classroom. They can participate in a facilitated Learning Lab livestream or take a live virtual tour of some of the museum’s most popular exhibits.

As they watch and read the news, students may hear the acronym NATO without understanding its meaning. Yet they have no doubt heard of countries inside and outside the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) from having watched international competitions such as the Olympics and the World Cup. Students can learn about their country and NATO with the NATO on the Map tool.

With the Math in the Media program from the American Mathematical Society (AMS), teachers can stay up-to-date with math in current events and get ideas for classroom activities. The site has two components: Digests of Math in the Media and Tony Phillips’ Take on Math in the Media.

The Spirit of Ramanujan STEM Talent Initiative is an outreach effort to find and encourage undiscovered science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) talent in the United States and worldwide. The program is intended for promising individuals who excel in the STEM subjects but lack traditional institutional support through grants and mentorship opportunities.

App Harnessing the Power of Citizen Scientists

The Meteor Counter, a free iPhone app developed by NASA, is designed to harness the power of citizen scientists to keep track of meteoroids. Using the app, people from all walks of life can help NASA scientists discover new meteor showers, pinpoint comet debris streams, and map the distribution of meteoroids around Earth’s orbit.
