Lesson on the Influence of Fake News

C-SPAN Classroom has a new lesson plan that is timely given the recent discussions about fake news stories created and shared through social media. Media Literacy & Fake News is a free lesson plan based on five C-SPAN videos featuring authors and other experts talking about the role of media in influencing how people think about political topics.

Family Coding Event

Pioneered by the California nonprofit MV GATE, Family Code Night is a whole-school family event that ignites coding and computer science learning at any elementary school and in any family. The program engages K–5 children and their parents or guardians in the experience of doing their first hour of computer programming together in an early evening special school program.

Lessons on the Ideas of Democracy

Facing History and Ourselves has produced a series of free videos and accompanying lessons that introduce a rigorous study of the Reconstruction era into American history classrooms. The video series presents interviews with scholars who offer insight into this complex history and address questions of freedom, justice, equality, and citizenship that are at the heart of the Reconstruction era.

Keynote:

Wild Imaginations, Curious Children, and Stories from Student-Ready Educators
Stephanie Passman & Eric Bredder, Albemarle County Public Schools

Our goal everyday is to make school awesome for students and teachers alike. We will share ways to provide each student with the necessary resources to learn, take meaningful risks, and create physical and digital representations of their original ideas. We will share anecdotes that provide strong evidence of the student learning that occurs while building meaningful relationships, and fostering creativity and collaboration. Student-ready educators are prepared for all students, so they can be prepared for their future.

We are excited to welcome Stephanie Passman and Eric Bredder as keynote speakers. These educators from Albemarle County will talk with us about creating innovative learning environments where students collaborate and create as a natural part of the learning process. Thanks for EN Computers for their support of the keynote.

Engineering Essay Contest

The National Academy of Engineering invites all students (girls and boys) in grades 3–12 to submit an essay to the 2017 EngineerGirl Essay Contest entitled “Engineering and Animals.”

Tool for Evaluating Ed Tech Integration

District- and school-level administrators can test a new tool developed by the US Department of Education (ED) to help measure the success of educational technology in schools. The Ed Tech Rapid Cycle Evaluation Coach tool will guide school leaders and teachers through the steps they should take before buying education technology.

Virtual Journey into the Human Heart

The Virtual Heart app invites students to explore multiple views of the human heart in real time: an external view and three internal views that realistically depict the heart’s valves, blood flow, and electrical system.

VE PLN in Minecraft, November 21, 2016, 8 PM

VSTE Virtual Environments PLN will meet in Minecraft on November 21, 2016, at 8 PM. We have a server on Beastnode. All you need is to get a regular Minecraft account and join our multiuser server at 69.175.17.26:25565. Send Kim Harrison (k4sons@gmail.com) with your Minecraft user name and she will whitelist you. Please don't want until the last minute.

Let's decorate the server for the holidays. Bring an idea for holiday pixel art.

We are using the 1.10.2 version.

We get on discord for voice chat simultaneously. Download it on your computer or mobile device. We can talk about the conference, what we are doing with students in Minecraft, what the new Minecraft Education Edition is like, or whatever you are interested in. We will post the URL to connect in Minecraft.

Virtual Reality Lab

Virtual reality (VR) can transport students to the beaches in the Maldives, on a science expedition in the Arctic, or into the middle of a refugee camp. The Global Nomads Group (GNG) is harnessing the power of virtual reality (VR) technology to spark curiosity and cultivate empathy in classrooms.

Guide Exploring Science and Technology in Film

The Museum of the Moving Image publishes Sloan Science & Film to enhance understanding of science through film. This is a freely downloadable guide to 46 short narrative (fiction) films, all supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s nationwide film program—available for streaming in the classroom—which explores science and technology themes and characters.

Social Writing in “Circles”

HaikuJAM is a social writing app that lets students write stories and poems together. Students can either write with others around the world or form “circles” with their friends. After users create an account, the app will open up to a timeline. There, students can click on “JAM” and start writing their own poem or help finish someone else’s poem.
