Program Integrating Engineering and Literacy

Researchers at Tufts University’s Center for Engineering Education and Outreach partnered with teachers to design a program they call Novel Engineering, which plays on the literary strengths of elementary and middle school teachers to help them explore hands-on, science-oriented activities in their classrooms.

Competition Bringing Poetry to Life

Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. The program’s National Recitation Contest, sponsored by the Poetry Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, begins at the classroom level.

Grants to Fund Special Projects

The Association of American Educators (AAE) Foundation offers classroom grants of up to $500 that can be used for a variety of projects and materials, including but not limited to books, software, calculators, math manipulatives, art supplies, audiovisual equipment, and lab materials.

Tool for Creating Augmented Reality Experiences

Metaverse – AR Browser by GoMeta makes it easy for anyone to create computer vision, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality experiences without needing to write complex code.

Simulation Techniques Practiced by Engineers

Designed by a rocket scientist, Truss Me! utilizes real algorithms and simulation techniques practiced by aerospace, mechanical, and civil engineers to test for stress and structure failure. Students can design and test structures in a realistic virtual environment.

Contest to Design an Uplifting, Interactive Doodle

K–12 students are invited to take part in the 2018 Doodle 4 Google contest and create an uplifting doodle that tells the world “What inspires me.” From crayons to clay, graphics, or even food, young artists can utilize any materials to bring their creations to life.

First-Person Accounts of Slavery Experiences

In the 1930s, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) sponsored a Federal Writers’ Project dedicated to chronicling the experience of slavery as remembered by former slaves. African American men and women born into slavery were interviewed, and their stories were recorded and transcribed.

Grants for Increasing Technology Integration and Student Achievement

Educators of America delivers new, sustainable, and useful educational technology to K–12 schools and classrooms. Through its microgrant program, the organization outfits classrooms with technology resources, including web-connected devices, electronic whiteboards, and tablets.

Instructional Models and Digital Tools for STEM Learning

WGBH Educational Foundation has launched the first set of interactive K–12 digital resources produced as part of “Bringing the Universe to America’s Classrooms.” These resources are being distributed free of charge through PBS LearningMedia to more than 1.9 million registered educators and their students across the country.

Interactive Quiz on Global Awareness

The New York Times Learning Network’s “Country of the Week” feature helps to build students’ geography skills. A weekly interactive quiz introduces students to a country via a recent video or photograph and then asks them to find that place on a map. The quiz then focuses on the demographics and culture of the country.

Gameplay Using Programming Commands

Designed for iOS, Cato’s Hike puts students in a hiker’s shoes (either Cato’s or his friend’s—students’ choice) on an odyssey to find a way through the magical world they’ve stumbled into and to get back home. As they engage in the game, students use programming commands to tell their character where to move and how to get past such obstacles as water, rocks, and trees.

Challenge to Code Open Source Projects

Google’s eighth annual Code-in challenge calls on students aged 13–17 to complete coding tasks on open source projects, with the aim of exposing teenagers to open source software development. To date, some 4,500 students have participated in the Google Code-in challenge, completing more than 23,000 tasks.
