Civics Inquiry Lessons Integrating Storytelling, Digital Media, and Literacy

Civic Life Project partners with educators to teach civics through a unique digital storytelling curriculum. In collaboration, Civic Life Project and National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) have launched Compelling Interviews for Civic Engagement, a civics inquiry unit to help students develop informed, diverse perspectives on social issues they care about.

 

SPOTLIGHT! On the Historical Legacy of Juneteenth*

On “Freedom’s Eve,” or the eve of January 1, 1863, enslaved and free African Americans gathered in churches and private homes all across the country awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect.

At the stroke of midnight, prayers were answered, as all enslaved people in Confederate States were declared legally free. Union soldiers, many of whom were Black, marched onto plantations and across cities in the South reading small copies of the Emancipation Proclamation, spreading the news of freedom in Confederate States. Only through the Thirteenth Amendment did emancipation end slavery throughout the United States.

 

Free Practical Guides for Engaging Students in AI Creation

The Hands-On AI Projects for the Classroom guides from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and General Motors provide elementary, secondary, elective, and computer science teachers with innovative curricular resources about artificial intelligence (AI) across various grade levels and subject areas.

 

Summer Programs Making Coding Education Accessible for All Students

Girls Who Code, an international nonprofit organization working to close the gender gap in tech, has announced its 2023 Summer Programs, free virtual opportunities for students in grades 9–12. As part of Girls Who Code’s commitment to providing students with resources about the many pathways into a STEM career, this year’s programs have been updated to include curriculum options on Gaming and Data Science.

A team of educators from across the country and around the globe joined the ChooseFI Foundation to create the PreK–12 Financial Literacy Curriculum to help students become ready for life after graduation. The curriculum is totally free, easy to implement, and easy to adapt.

 

Google Initiative Expanding Student Access to STEM

Google’s Code Next lab is a free computer science education program that meets Black, Latinx, and Native high school students in their own communities and provides the skills and inspiration they need for long and rewarding careers in computer science–related fields.

 

Language Learning in VR with Native Speakers in Authentic Locations

ImmerseMe offers solo language practice in virtual reality. In each lesson, students will find themselves in a 360-degree photographic image filmed on location in a place where their language of choice is spoken.

 

SPOTLIGHT! On Building and Cultivating Community Through Astronomy

The flagship event of Astronomers Without Borders, Global Astronomy Month takes place every year in April. The aim is to encourage everyone to go outside, look up, and share the sky. It’s also an excellent time to immerse students in STEM topics, from telling space stories to engaging in a virtual exploration of the Universe.
