Join Us for Supporting Educators’ EdTech Selection and Implementation Webinar

January 19, 2023 by Brian Thomas

If you are interested in using evidence in your technology decisions, this is the webinar for you! Join us for the Thursday, January 26th at 4:00 webinar Supporting Educators' EdTech Selection and Implementation.

The EdTech Evidence Exchange will go over information on gathering timely evidence from your educators. In 30 minutes you will hear about a partnership between the VDOE Office of STEM and the EdTech Evidence Exchange that pays Virginia mathematics-involved educators to offer their insights into how technology is working (or not working) for them. Your data are available instantly in an online platform, in time for budget justifications and decisions, and will support ongoing implementation decisions.

This newsletter will help you with MLK’s Legacy, Go on a Power Trip, Get Students Moving & More...

SPOTLIGHT! On the Life and Legacy of MLK Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a tireless advocate for racial equality, working classes, and the oppressed around the world. Tap these resources throughout the year to help students learn about MLK’s significance to American culture and history.

Mobile Platform That Engages Children in Active Screen Time

HiveClass is an app-based platform that offers guidance to children on how to play sports and improve as they progress through the app. The idea is to engage more children in active screen time—to get them moving rather than passively watching.

STEM Summer Camp for the Next Generation of Innovative Thinkers

Every year invention education experts at the National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF) collaborate with NIHF inductees to develop an all-new curriculum for Camp Invention. By integrating 21st-century learning with fun, hands-on activities, the NIHF team ensures that each STEM education program not only aligns with state and national K–6 education standards but also provides the next generation of inventors with skills to last a lifetime.

Young Social Change Leaders

The Peace First Challenge helps youth (aged 13–25) create and lead projects that address injustice in their community through compassion, courage, and collaborative leadership. All they have to do is upload a one-minute reel on their Instagram or TikTok profile, showing how young people are changing their communities for the better.

Merry New Year!

January 6, 2023 by Brian Thomas

It is my hope that you had a rewarding and happy holiday season and with a slight twist on the phrase I am wishing you a Merry New Year. If you follow the work of VSTE then you are already aware of some of the merriment we have in store for the first few months of 2023.

We are very eager to participate in a webinar Thursday, January 26th at 2:00 PM with our good friends from LearnPlatform. You can register for this event at go.learnplatform.com/virginia-edtech

February opens up with our collaborative conference event with VASCD. The Power of Coaching conference was very well received with the first offering reaching capacity which allowed us to offer two other dates for the event. We will gather in Charlottesville, VA on February 7 and 8 and then again on February 23rd northwest of Richmond in Short Pump. You can find out more and register by visiting the Events Page at VASCD.org

February 23rd is also Digital Learning Day and VSTE is partnering with VDOE to plan events and opportunities to celebrate digital learning every day in a variety of ways. You can join us on Feb. 8th at 3:00 PM for a Regionally Speaking Webinar hosted by our friends and colleagues at Virtual Virginia. Follow @VSTE & @VirtualVirginia on Twitter for announcements and the meeting link.

March will welcome the EdTechRVA event on the 8th. Be sure to follow @GRAETCorg on Twitter or check back at graetc.org/edtechrva-2023/ to learn more about this annual event and be sure to answer the call for proposals before January 13th at graetc.org/2022/11/edtechrva-2023-call-for-proposals/.

All through the remainder of the winter months, VSTE will be following #VSTEinAction on Twitter to discover what has gone from the conference to the classroom. Post your activities, accomplishments, and successes using the #VSTEinAction. We are eager to see what merriment you have going on in the first quarter of 2023 as well. Each tweet with #VSTEinAction will be entered to win one of 5 monthly prizes between January and March!

Be Merry, Make Good Happen, and Let's Keep in Touch!
Rod Carnill, VSTE Executive Director
