Authentic Opportunities to Learn and Do Mathematics

With the Math in the Media program from the American Mathematical Society (AMS), teachers can stay up-to-date with math in current events and get ideas for classroom activities. The site has two components: Digests of Math in the Media and Tony Phillips’ Take on Math in the Media.

Outreach to Engage Talented Underrepresented Students in STEM

The Spirit of Ramanujan STEM Talent Initiative is an outreach effort to find and encourage undiscovered science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) talent in the United States and worldwide. The program is intended for promising individuals who excel in the STEM subjects but lack traditional institutional support through grants and mentorship opportunities.

App Harnessing the Power of Citizen Scientists

The Meteor Counter, a free iPhone app developed by NASA, is designed to harness the power of citizen scientists to keep track of meteoroids. Using the app, people from all walks of life can help NASA scientists discover new meteor showers, pinpoint comet debris streams, and map the distribution of meteoroids around Earth’s orbit.

Citizen Science Project to Preserve Nature

Project Budburst, which is managed by the National Ecological Observatory and Chicago Botanic Garden, collects data on the timing of leafing, flowering, and fruiting of plants throughout the year to help scientists investigate the impact of climate change on different species.
