common sense education logoJoin VSTE's Education Committee on Thursday, February 24, 2022, at 7 PM. We'll be learning more about media literacy with Sue Thotz from VSTE's partner, Common Sense Education.
News and Media Literacy:  Critical, Not Cynical

How can we help students learn to think actively about the news and media they encounter every day? How can we nurture a critical -- but not cynical -- eye toward evaluating the current world of news media, on the internet and otherwise? Join Common Sense's introductory workshop to digital citizenship with a focus on news and media literacy. We'll explore resources that develop students' abilities to identify, evaluate, and effectively find credible and trustworthy sources.

Approaching Math Concepts with a Growth Mindset

P
P
Memorizing math content as a checklist or set of skills is not how the brain actually learns. Research from the MIND Research Institute shows there is a better way. Several programs for prekindergarten through grade 8 are available for supplemental use, homeschool, and even summer school. After successful implementation, students will develop a deep conceptual understanding and be able to approach new concepts with confidence and a growth mindset. Get started today and change your math culture.

Prestigious Award for Exemplary STEM Teaching
P

For nearly 40 years, the White House Office of Science and Technology has honored STEM teachers nationwide for both their deep content knowledge and their ability to motivate students. The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) are the highest honors bestowed by the United States government on K–6 STEM educators. Anyone can nominate a STEM teacher at the K–6 level. Teachers can also directly apply at paemst.org. Awardees will receive a certificate signed by the President; a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation; an expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC; and access to a nationwide cohort of award-winning teachers.
