Digital Citizenship week is October 19-23, 2026. It was started by Common Sense Education in 2010 alongside Harvard’s Project Zero. Each year, teachers use this week to empower students to think critically, behave ethically, and use digital devices and now AI safely. Digital Citizenship may be celebrated during a week in October but it should also be integrated into classroom lessons on a regular basis. Students need the information reiterated all year long. Below you will find a collection of resources you can use for Digital Citizenship lessons for K-12 students.

Common Sense Media - full lesson plans, resources, and activities. Elementary students love the characters!

Nearpod - a blog post from last year that has links to lots of great Nearpod lessons!

Wayground

NetSmartzKids - printable activities, e-books, and Cloud Quest- an online interactive safety adventure

iKeepSafe

Google’s Be Internet Awesome - Curriculum for educators, including an AI literacy guide, as well as activities for students.

Daily Activity Ideas

Day 1: Canva Link (screen-reader friendly)

Digital literacy empowers K–12 students to find, evaluate, create, and share information safely and responsibly. Teachers can build digital literacy by guiding students to question sources, make thoughtful choices online, and use technology to learn, create, and collaborate. Activity: Have students compare two online sources about the same topic, identify evidence of credibility, and share which source they would trust and why.

Day 2:

Online safety empowers K–12 students to protect their personal information, make thoughtful choices online, and communicate respectfully in digital spaces. Teachers can help K–12 students practice online safety by modeling how to protect personal information, recognize risks, and communicate with care. Activity: Have students review a fictional online message or profile, identify what information should stay private, and rewrite one response to make it safer and more respectful.

Day 3:

K–12 students can help stop cyberbullying by treating others with respect, refusing to share hurtful content, saving evidence, and seeking help from a trusted adult. Teachers can help prevent cyberbullying by creating respectful digital communities, teaching students how to respond safely, and making it easy to seek support. Activity: Give students a fictional cyberbullying scenario. Have them identify a respectful response, explain when to save evidence, and name a trusted adult or reporting channel they could use.”

Day 4:

Media literacy empowers K–12 students to question information, evaluate sources, recognize bias, and make informed choices about the media they consume and share. Teachers can strengthen media literacy by helping students question messages, evaluate evidence, recognize bias, and reflect on how media shapes their choices. Activity: Have students examine a news post, advertisement, or social media message, identify its purpose and intended audience, check the evidence, and share one sign of possible bias.

Day 5:

AI literacy empowers K–12 students to understand how artificial intelligence works, use AI thoughtfully and safely, recognize its limitations and biases, and make responsible decisions about its role in learning and everyday life. Teachers can build AI literacy by helping students ask critical questions, use AI transparently and safely, recognize bias and limitations, and take responsibility for their own thinking. Activity: Give students a short AI-generated response to a familiar question. Have them identify claims that need verification, check reliable sources, and revise the response to make it more accurate, fair, and transparent.”
