Board of Directors

Board Candidate – Timothy F. Taylor

April 6, 2019 by timstahmer

Tim Taylor, candidate for VSTE Board 2019Timothy F. Taylor
Instructional Technology Supervisor
Shenandoah County Public Schools

Educational Leadership

I currently serve on the VSTE Board and as the Chairperson for the Education Committee. In 2018, I served as the Chairperson for the VSTE Adhoc Committee that updated the TSIPs (Technology Standards for Instructional Personnel). I have served as President of the Shenandoah Valley Technology Consortium and continue to be active in this organization. I currently have the pleasure to work with and oversee the Instructional Technology Resource Coaches in my school division. They are true rock stars!

Vision for VSTE

My vision of VSTE in these next three years would emphasize the continued work and effectiveness of our core areas of Advocacy, Education, and Outreach. It is important that VSTE has a strong voice for its membership in all of these areas. We need to be a leader when it comes to advocating for our children on instructional technology issues. We need to be an organization that when educators think of learning how to effectively implement instructional technology, VSTE should be towards the top of the list. Finally, we must continue to reach out to not only our members, but all educators in the Commonwealth to emphasize the importance of instructional technology and how it can positively impact student learning. It is all about the kids.

Biographical Sketch

I am currently in my 39th year of education in Shenandoah County Public Schools. I have served as an elementary and middle school teacher. I have coached at the secondary level and I have served in the district office for the past 22 years. I am an adjunct professor teaching instructional technology courses for James Madison and Eastern Mennonite Universities. I enjoy spending time with my wife and two daughters.

Bea Leiderman, candidate for VSTE Board 2019Bea Leiderman
Upper School Technology Specialist
The Steward School, Richmond, Virginia

Educational Leadership

For the past twelve years, I have worked with teachers in Goochland County at multiple stages of technology adoption, from labs, to computer carts, to a K-12 1:1 deployment. My expertise is in helping teachers lead their students through technology-rich projects. I provide support for teachers that increases their level of comfort with technology and provides opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning in their own voice.

Vision for VSTE

My vision is to work with VSTE leaders and members to make the organization more diverse and inclusive, not just in its membership, but also in its PD offerings and advocacy goals.

Biographical Sketch

I started my career in education as a Spanish teacher, and have been an instructional technology coach for the past twelve years. I am an avid nature photographer, focusing mostly on insects and fungi. I have published six books created using my own photographs, and I use this hobby to explore how learning happens when aided by technology and a community of peers and experts.

Educational Leadership

I have been a leader for instructional technology in Clarke County for seven years including professional development and edtech coaching as well as leading the district innovation committee. This committee strives to shape the future of Clarke County Public Schools by encouraging innovative educator and student learning through utilizing technology, promoting best practices, and maintaining a growth mindset. All learner should be able to determine their own trajectory and path towards personal greatness.

VSTE should and will continue to be a pillar of support and advocate not only for meaningful technology integration but for what is right and equitable for all members of our learning community. VSTE should work to augment it’s free professional development opportunities through avenues such as virtual conferences, webinars, and more. It must be a tenet of VSTE to work to close equity gaps within the digital realm and beyond throughout the commonwealth. Every school, every learner, every educator, should know of and be buoyed by VSTE and the professional learning network it embodies.

Speak Up Survey Closes Soon

January 9, 2019 by vsteadmin

Do you hear what I hear?

Speak Up and make our voice as big as the sea! The Speak Up Research Project for Digital Learning has been collecting data about technology in education since 2003 and providing a voice to students, educators, parents, administrators and community members. This data is used by education, business and policy leaders to inform decisions about federal, state and local education programs and funding.

Speak Up is a free service the provides access to key stakeholder views and ideas about technology in education. The research project is a free and effective way to amplify student voice, inform decision making among leadership, ensure stakeholders a means of involvement, increase community member engagement and did I mention it is free.

Current topics covered in the survey and research project range from teaching and learning with technology, blended learning models, to STEM, coding, gaming, data privacy, digital literacy and citizenship as well as college and career readiness.

Last year the survey reached nearly 406,000 participants from over 11,000 schools representing over 3200 districts. This year,we need your help! With little over a month to go, we are not yet at the halfway mark for number of participants. Virginia’s schools need to be represented and join the conversation. So come on VSTE members! Speak Up!

District/School registration for Speak Up 2018-19 is ongoing! Get started now! Surveys are open for participation until January 31, 2019. To learn more about Speak Up and register to get your schools’ free data, visit tomorrow.org/speakup/registration.
