Thank You VSTE!

May 2, 2022 by timstahmer

I wanted to take this opportunity in my last blog post as a VSTE Board Member to reflect a bit on my six year tenure. First, I want to thank all of the people I’ve had the privilege to serve with these past six years. The people I have met and worked with have not only enriched my professional life, but my personal one as well. I would love to mention everyone by name, but I am afraid I would leave someone out! Serving on this board has opened the door to many other connections with organizations, businesses, and individuals that have been productive and fun for me. As many of you know, whenever you do not know the answer to a question, just knowing the right person to reach out to to get the answer makes all the difference.

VSTE rocks graphicServing on the VSTE Board has offered me many memorable experiences. Even though the pandemic interrupted some of our face-to-face experiences, I was fortunate to have many that I treasure. Being involved with the VSTE Conference as a Board Member only enhanced my experiences at our annual VSTE Conference. The conference has always been my favorite conference to attend. I have been to many excellent regional, national, and international conferences, but our conference is second to none. Quality presenters, great networking, great facilities, passionate educators, and of course, M&Ms and candied bacon!

I have and continue to serve on many boards, but the ones that mean the most to me are the ones that give me an opportunity to “serve.” I feel VSTE has allowed me to do this not only as a Board member, but especially in giving me the opportunity to serve as the Chair of the Education Committee. I want to thank all the people that have served on this committee through the years. I am proud of our work which includes the rewriting of the TSIPs (Technology Standards for Instructional Personnel), assisting with the writing of the Workshop in a Box for the rollout of GoOpenVA by the DOE, providing quality blog posts for our website, assisting with our #VSTEinAction social media campaign, creation of Edtech Shorts video tutorials, and providing quality guest speakers and presenters on pertinent topics in the world of education. I appreciate Emily Heller for taking on the role of chairperson for the Education Committee. I know she will do a great job and make a positive impact.

I was taught that it is important when you leave a position in an organization, it should be in a better place because of the service you provided and that its future looks bright. I am confident VSTE will continue to serve, grow, and lead the way when it comes to effective instructional technology integration in our schools. Thanks to everyone for allowing me to serve and I wish the best to all those that continue to serve! VSTE rocks!

Written by Tim Taylor. Tim is the Instructional Technology Supervisor for Shenandoah County Public Schools and, as he discusses in this post, is an outgoing member of the VSTE Board and chair of the VSTE Education Committee.

Board Candidate – Dani Hall

April 18, 2022 by timstahmer

Coordinator of Instructional Technology
Prince William County Public School

Educational Leadership

I am the Coordinator of Instructional Technology for Prince William County Public Schools, where I collaborate with instructional technology coaches, teachers, curriculum supervisors, and district leaders to help lead technology integration in our division. I have led projects that have created innovation, engagement, and empowerment for our teachers and students focused on research-based instructional strategies. I have been an Instructional and Special Education Leader, Instructional Technology Coordinator, and Acting Administrator for Arlington County Public Schools. I am the North TIER representative for Prince William County and serve on the VSTE exhibit hall committee.

Vision for VSTE

Over the next three years, I would like to continue the work helping to grow the VSTE brand making VSTE the technology resource for not just instructional coaches but all educators in the state of Virginia. As VSTE is about connection, collaboration, and professional learning for educators, it also advocates that students all over the state have equitable access to meaningful learning opportunities. Building the VSTE community where educators can grow and develop new collaborations will strengthen instructional practice and create a thriving future for our students. Finally, I would like to see the VSTE conference continue to be innovative and provide first-class professional learning around educational technology.

Biographical Sketch

I have worked in education for over 25 years, as a Special Education Teacher, Instructional Technology Coordinator, Administrator, and Adjunct Professor. I have a B.S in Speech Pathology and Audiology, an M.Ed. in Special Education with a concentration in Assistive Special Education Technology, and an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership. I am a lifelong learner and enjoy the challenge of learning new things. I am currently in the portfolio phase of my ISTE certification, an Apple Learning Coach, Discovery Educator, SMART Exemplary Educator, a BrainPOP Educator, Microsoft Innovative Educator, Google Educator, and a Flipgrid Educator. In my free time, I enjoy attending my son's sports and drama events and going to the beach and Disney World with my family.

Board Candidate – Patrick Hausammann

Educational Leadership

I have been a leader in instructional technology in Virginia for over a decade, having the privileges to work in PWCS and CCPS in addition to presenting at numerous conferences. I've helped led initiatives to transition to Google Workspace, become a Common Sense Certified District, continue to innovate our division's PD conference each year, and more. I've also had the honor of leading our new teacher program and supervising instructional technology tools & staff. Above all, I help lead the integration of technology over just the sporadic use within classrooms to provide never before possible options and possibilities to our students.

Vision for VSTE

As a board member and treasurer for VSTE over the last few year, I've seen the organization grow and expand it's support of educators in VA to implement meaningful technology integration (webinars, conferences, blogs, & more). I would look to see these efforts continue to expand and reach even more educators throughout VA and beyond. Outreach, support, and multiple avenues to each should be priorities for VSTE over the next three years alongside efforts to be a model of inclusivity and appreciation of all educators and their experiences.

Biographical Sketch

Patrick Hausammann is a coach and supervisor of ed tech fueled by perpetual optimism and the belief in the power of a #growthmindset to #failforward en route to creativity and innovation. He is an edtech coach and supervisor, the founder of UnisonEDU.org (a nonprofit to help schools), co-founder of #EdcampNSV, an ASCD Emerging Leader, and Google Innovator & Trainer. He welcomes learning and collaboration at www.phausedu.com and @PHausEDU on Twitter.

Educational Leadership

I have experience as an instructional coach, building level administrator, and district level administrator. I have contributed to teams that have lead initiatives in Tiered Support Systems, Literacy, Curriculum Writing, and Educational Technology.

Vision for VSTE

My vision for VSTE within the next three years is to increase minority representation within the ranks and leadership of the VSTE organization. I would like to see more men and women of color visibly active in their school communities, state conferences, and both national and international conferences. I would also like to revamp the mentor/mentee program to continue to build a pipeline of individuals to be ready to lead VSTE into the future.

Biographical Sketch

Dr. Jackson is an instructional leader who has roots in literacy, advanced academics, and educational technology. She has worked in both TX and VA to increase minority student representation in underrepresented communities like Gifted and Talented and Technology outlets. Dr. Jackson is passionate about breaking the concrete ceiling for marginalized groups by creating space and opportunities for them to move into leadership and scholarship.
