Outstanding Technology Coach of the Year Award

VSTE will recognize and honor three technology coaches in Virginia who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and leadership in implementing technology to improve education. Award recipients will be selected from a pool of nominations submitted by VSTE members from around Virginia.

Nominations will be accepted from October 19-November 1. Nominations will be reviewed by the VSTE Board of Directors and past winners. Select nominators will be contacted by November 5 to provide additional evidence and documentation. Nominators are encouraged to work with the nominee to gather this additional information.

Decisions will be made prior to the VSTE Annual Conference. Award winners will be recognized during the opening general session at the annual conference. They are also provided with a complimentary conference registration and two nights of hotel accommodations for the annual conference. This year's conference will be held December 5-7 2021, in Roanoke.

The Awards Committee uses the ISTE standards as the basis for judging the Outstanding Technology Coach awards. Please review the appropriate standards when preparing nomination materials. Nominees are rated solely using criteria identified in the rubric.

Virtual Summer Camps to Keep Children’s Minds Active

Parents and children will find a wide variety of engaging camp activities to take part in when they dive into Camp Wonderopolis. Some of the activities revolve around STEM-field careers, others are designed to boost literacy and comprehension, and still others to help foster and improve critical thinking and creativity in young minds.

Imagineering in a Box is designed to pull back the curtain to show students in middle school and high school how artists, designers, and engineers work together to create theme parks.  The program, from Khan Academy, takes a behind-the-scenes look with Disney Imagineers and makes it an active learning experience by weaving together videos and exercises into lessons that culminate in student-driven projects.
Digital Games to Increase Understanding of Chemistry Through Play

Developed by PlayMada Games, Collisions helps high school students visualize and interact with chemistry concepts through engaging and challenging digital games that integrate with the chemistry curriculum.

Sometimes being the technology director is a lonely job. The VSTE CoSN Council wants to help you connect with other technology leaders around the state. Join us on Tuesday, November 19, 2019, at 3:30 PM for our fall get together. We'll talk about student data privacy and discuss other challenges and opportunities of the cloud-based school. The event is free and open to all but pre-registration is required for access to the teleconference. CoSN membership is not required.

VSTE CoSN Council Awarded Grant for CETL Certification

CoSN sponsors the CETL certification, a nationally recognized program for education technology leaders. VSTE has been awarded a grant from the Virginia Department of Education to provide grants for up to eight leaders to pursue this certification in 2020. The application is open now through November 27, 2019, and grants will be announced in mid-December. CoSN membership is not required.

The Virginia Society for Technology in Education honors excellence in educational technology through the Outstanding Coach of the Year award, given at the annual conference in December.

Nominations are closed.

The Coach of the Year awards recognize and honor a coach who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and leadership in implementing technology to improve education.

Nominations will remain open through early September. Nominees will have until early October to provide supporting evidence to the awards committee and decisions will be made by October 15, 2019. Award winners will be recognized during the opening general session at the annual conference. They are also provided with a complimentary conference registration and hotel accommodations for the annual conference. This year's conference will be held December 8 - 10, in Roanoke.

Vote Now for Virginia’s NextGen: Emerging EdTech Leaders

Two Virginia educators--Chanel Alford-Campbell from Alexandria City and Scott Lewis from Frederick County--have been nominated for the NextGen Emerging EdTech Leaders award, an annual recognition developed and co-sponsored by CoSN and EdScoop. This award is meant to recognize and support emerging leaders who are passionate about K-12 education technology and committed to taking their career to the next level.

Here's a bit more information about the outstanding nominees from Virginia:

CHANEL ALFORD-CAMPBELL

In just a few months with Alexandria City Public Schools, Chanel Alford-Campbell, a Technology Integration Specialist, has helped to create a professional development plan that includes both digital and in-person components. She also works with a group of girls after school teaching block coding, JavaScript, and coding with sphero robots. With a passion for programming languages, she says she aspires to further the field of instructional technology by conducting research, writing articles, and designing a nationwide professional development model.

SCOTT LEWIS

From Middle School Dean to Instructional Technology Coach, Scott Lewis from Frederick County now mentors and offers feedback for 80 teachers as they figure out how to incorporate technology into their lesson planning. As part of this role, Lewis worked with co-taught and self-contained special education teachers who teach students with learning and physical disabilities on online portfolios and coding. Lewis, along with a teacher and student, were invited to speak before Congress on this work. In addition to his day-to-day work, Lewis founded a weekly Twitter-based edchat centered around instructional leadership called #fcpslearn. He also created the district's first podcast that shares innovative teaching practices and lessons.
